Trains Across the Sea: New Jersey and the Merci Train
Presented by Kevin Phalon
In 1947, popular and controversial journalist Drew Pearson challenged Americans to do their part to aid a starving postwar Europe. In doing so, individual Americans would loudly proclaim their support for their allies, and beat the Russians in the earliest days of the Cold War. What resulted was a true grassroots, international exchange of goodwill. America sent 700 carloads of food to France and Italy. As a thank you, France sent back the "Merci Train"--49 vintage WWI freight cars, one for each state, decorated and filled with sentimental gifts of thanks from the French people.
In this presentation, United Railroad Historical Society of NJ Executive Director Kevin Phalon will share the story of this cultural exchange of trains, New Jersey's role in both, and the treasure hunt that resulted in the return of the Garden State's long-lost French boxcar. It will include photos and film of these major events, including never-before-seen images found during URHS's research.
